The Cinder Crown is a dark fantasy setting built around one rule: power in the kingdom is measured in what a ruler is willing to let burn.
This project follows the work from the first thumbnails to final keyframes: the citadel and its ridge, the court that serves it, and the ash country that surrounds it.
Concept
The premise
A crown made of cooled slag is passed from ruler to ruler. Each one adds a piece and takes something from the kingdom to pay for it.
The visual language follows that logic: charred timber, pale ash, and one stubborn colour of ember that appears wherever a decision was made.

Early silhouettes of the ridge and the main gate.

Shape language
Heavy bases, narrow spires, and long falling lines that read as smoke even in solid stone. Every large shape in the setting follows the same fall from top to bottom.
Development

Environment explorations: ash country, the ridge road, the lower city.
Thumbnails were made in batches of twelve and cut to the strongest three.

The court
Servants of the crown wear layered ash-coloured cloth that is only ever repaired, never replaced. Rank is shown by how many repairs a garment carries.
Process
Sketches and thumbnails

Working method
Values first, then colour, then detail. Large shapes are decided in greyscale and only afterwards given light and temperature.
Blender blockouts were used for the citadel to keep scale and perspective consistent across views.
